Watch Uncut Gems (2020) Full 4K-HD Movie Online
Welcome to the first Week End Review, a new space for me to write at length about new albums or other pieces of media I was able to spend some time with during the week. I want this to be a space that’s influenced by me stepping outside my own frame of reference and trying to expand my own sense of context and taste. In order to accomplish this, I asked a small and smart group of facebook friends (most of whom I’ve never met in person) to offer suggestions on what to cover for this first column. So with thanks to them, here’s the first column.

Please excuse the following truism, but it’s the only way I can think to begin this section: A good soundtrack is a character onto itself. In the case of Daniel Lopatin’s Uncut Gems OST, the soundtrack is, itself, a sonic distillation of the Safdie Brothers’ vain and manic degenerate gambler/jeweler Howard Ratner. Lopatin collaborated with the Safdie’s on their last feature, 2017’s Good Time, under his Oneohtrix Point Never moniker. As with the Good Time soundtrack, Lopatin mixes in tracks of dialogue to help the listener — if they’re familiar with the film — orient themselves with the narrative, but here here it adds to a peculiar, rare feeling I had listening to the soundtrack: I didn’t feel like I was separate from the experience of watching Uncut Gems, rather, I felt as if I was Howard Ratner himself, all hubris, agitation, and fleeting triumph. Throughout the album, woodwind instruments join the mix to offer moments of grace and relief, yet are more often than not swallowed up and overtaken by the synths. This suggests and compliments a diegetic theme of the movie. Not only is Howard Ratner unable to see the full consequences of his actions, he’s unable to fully hear and accept moments of grace and beauty; it’s all just more noise to him.

Soundtrack midpoint “School Play” is the highlight of the album for me, all propulsion and pulse, the sound of your bad decisions coming at you full speed.
